Impressive debut single from up-and-coming new Swedish-based indiepop act, The Lovekevins
This summer I visited the Emmaboda festival here in Sweden for the first time in many years, and a lot had changed. The small festival that I came to love five or six years ago had turned into a much bigger event with lots and lots of drunk teenagers and a lot of horrible bands. Well, there were quite a lot of good bands too, and one of them was The Lovekevins from Malmö. I had never heard of them before, so I sat in front of the smallest stage of the festival watching them set up on stage, and immediately started thinking of Violent Femmes. This was definitely looking good, and when they started playing, that feeling wasn’t lost at all. After the gig, I found a 7” they had released on their own, but as I didn’t have any money at the time I couldn’t buy it, but when I got home I downloaded some songs off their website, and they were good, especially 'Happy Happy', a song that has been played a lot on my iPod this autumn. 'Max Léon' is their first “proper” release, on the Songs I Wish I Had Written label, the label responsible for bringing Le Sport to a wider audience, and it’s a good four-track EP. Sadly 'Happy Happy' isn’t on it, but the songs offered here are good too. The influence from Violent Femmes is very audible in 'Blame the English', the last song on the EP, which is performed just on acoustic guitars and a snare drum, with the vocals being the only real difference. Front man Ollie just hasn’t got the whiney voice of Gordon Gano. This is just one of the many great bands coming out of Sweden at moment. Be sure to check out their website, too: www.lovekevins.laparole.se, and download that song I mentioned...

Disappointing first full length album from initially promising Swedish indiepop group the Lovekevins, who have replaced their acoustic guitars with synthesizers to unsatisfactory effect |
