The Blackfire Revelation endeared themselves to me on their website –in the links section was a link to a clothing store exhorting the reader to “Buy your ladyfriend something nice. She deserves it.” That’s what we like to see. I also liked their motto on the CD “Taking no prisoners. And if we do not abusing them”. So they’ve got an ironic sense of humour. Let's see what else I can find out about them. John Fields (guitars, vocals, bass) and Hank Haney (drums), are The Blackfire Revelation, and they’re from New Orleans. On this EP they are helped out by Sean Yseult, ex White Zombie on Blue Cheer's 'Second Time Around', the second of the two cover versions on this EP, the other being 'I Want You Right Now' by The Troggs. There’s clearly a 60s / 70s influence going on here. I suppose the best way I can describe it is psychedelic-metal – heavier than it’s 70s counterpart, the vocal style is more reminiscent of Henry Rollins. Given that I’m not a big fan of metal, I quite enjoyed this mainly because of the psychedelic twist they gave it. 'I Want you Right Now' was practically unrecognisable from The Troggs' original version. Their own tracks are pretty good, especially 'Preach To the Choir and I hope that they’ve got plenty more of their own stuff and don’t rely on covers, even if their interpretation of them bears little resemblance to the originals, which is always a good thing – what’s the point of doing a cover if you’re not going to add anything new? If you like The Rollins Band, Black Sabbath and the more psychedelic end of metal and you’re fed up with 80's influenced pop, you couldn’t do worse than check out The Blackfire Revelation.
