Label: Art And Industry
Format: CD

intro

Enjoyable fifth album and first in nearly 12 years from the reformed House of Love, which proves to be an instant return to form

After reforming a few years back, the House of Love have finally got around to releasing new material, and has it been worth the wait? Yes. .... The album is a ten tracker without a bad track on it. 'Days Run Away', their fifth album and first in nearly 12 years, sees the House of Love back with original member Terry Bickers who left the band quite early on. The one thing you can say about this record is that it is well thought out, and the song structures and progression patterns on it are wonderful. It is a return to proper songmanship in these empty times we now live in. It kicks off with 'Love You Too Much', which is loud and rocking from the start, and features some excellent chord progressions. 'Gotta Be That Way' is acoustic flavoured and sounds something like the Smiths. 'Maybe You Know' is again acoustic, sounding a little like the Kinks, with some very nice harmonies and sounds very much like the House of Love we know and love so well. 'Kinda Love', which is a few years old now, is very soft and downbeat, but gets faster as it progresses. It has a soft Velvets feel to it but the lead guitar sadly sounds a bit like Eric Clapton. Oh dear...... 'Money and Time' is quite epic in a House of Love way. It sounds very familiar but has a nice middle bit which is very experimental. The title track is a nice little toe tapper, while 'Already Gone' is perky and sounds like the Smiths doing a cover of Elvis' 'Marie's the Name'. 'Wheels' is pleasant enough and rocks gently, and has a Soft Boys sense of humour to it. 'Kit Carter' to me is the album's best track, very rocking, with more strong progression patterns. Classic House of Love really. It ends with an acoustic number called 'Anyday I Want' which is Kinks like and a nice way to end this fine record. Welcome back guys.
