intro
Anthemic and epic new single from the much touted Hope of the States, the new hopes of British alternative rock
Hope of the States return with their second single and their first for their new major label, Sony. ‘Enemies/Friends’ features three new songs and a video. It is also available in a very limited 7” with an exclusive B side not available elsewhere. Cartel shops are also supplying a lyric sheet with each purchase, This single also gave the band its first appearance on ‘Top of the Pops’. ‘Enemies/Friends’ has all the potential to become a future anthem once the band’s fanbase had had time to grow a little. The song is jangly with a going-to-war drumbeat, but there is also some lovely violin playing going on in the background . The second track, ‘101st Lament’, is a piano and sad violin-based beautiful instrumental. The last number is a 7 minute plus epic, ‘Static in the Cities (Demo)’, which again jangles well and also had some excellent and intelligent guitar playing. It rocks in the style of the Waterboys, but without The Sea obsessions and ends in a wonderful onslaught of violins, drums and guitars. Hope of the States can only become better and will steal all our hearts. A true and great British band.
