intro
"Upfront" fourth solo album from the Jerusalem born, now New York based Badawi which combines "dub with mashes of North African and Middle Eastern rhythms and sounds."
Last August Neil Cooper, the founder of the Reach Out International label, died in Manhatten from a heart attack. This release, for understandable reasons did not receive the appropriate support that it deserved. On his previous album 'The Unspeakable', Badawi (aka Rez Mesinia, who is also half of illbient echo masters Sub Dub, who have a string of releases on the Asphodel label), things got pretty mystic. This new upfront release finds Badawi going back to bass, and combines truly genuine dub with mashes of North African and Middle Eastern rhythms and sounds throughout. Born in Jerusalem, the now New York based Badawi has become a magician and a hypnotiser on the dance floor. Midian was the soldier who stood up up against the misuse of the word of God. On this album, the fourth Badawi offering, one finds this great dignity transformed into music. Assembling together the complexity of Moroccan, Syrian, Palestinian and Israeli rhythm patterns, 'Soldier of Midian' is a celebration of both imagination and originality. Playing the bendir as a basic persussion instrument, Badawi has all the tools for an oriental Bonanza. With the daff and the derbouka (the iraki tablah) the Badawi sound becomes a dense dance freeride. 'Stampede' is a corker, fusing rock and desertdub. Followed by 'Dehydration' and the suspenseful 'Dance of Dajz Mara' the album intriguingly represents what already is a stunner in dub voyage. Your life will be enriched by the march of the 'Soldier of Midian'.
