Dusty Springfield was an icon of the ‘Swinging Sixties’. With her powerful vocals, distinctive blonde beehive, thick black eyeliner and eyeshadow, and an inimitable ability to convey vulnerability, Springfield was a shining star in a decade full of musical invention and sensational performances. A new release on vinyl (originally released on CD in 2007), ‘The BBC Sessions’ are the surviving radio sessions recorded by the singer, covering the formative years of her career,1962 to 1970, and her evolution from a more folk-oriented sound, singing alongside her brother Tom as part of The Springfields, to the sensuous soul singer she would gain worldwide renown for. Highlights of the twenty-two-track collection include: a stripped-back version of ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’, showcasing Springfield’s evocative vocals; the plaintive ‘Losing You’; a powerful cover of ‘Mockingbird’; a vibrant version of ‘Uptight (Everything’s Alright)' ; the passionate, emotive ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’; the soulful ‘To Love Somebody’; one of Springfield’s classic hits ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’; and the closer, an exuberant rendition of '(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher'. Colourful, emotionally resonating, ‘The BBC Sessions’ are an important moment in the catalogue of an incomparable and much-missed singer.
