intro
With personnel changes German supergroup Automat's fifth album proves dull and unimaginative
The advance track off the album, 'Climb' with Barbie Williams, did not bode well and the departure of Jochen Arbeit (of Die Haut and Einstürzende Neubauten) is good reason for doubt about the current Automat sound. And by Jove, the remaining duo of Georg Huber and Achim Färber now produce muzak on auto-repeat. It is rather hard to find a decent track, and I had to stop myself from reaching out for the fast forward button every two or three minutes. 'Youthman' provides a few moments of adventure in sound but even that track remains quite dull. The vocals are flat, the lyrics as meaningful as in an ITV advert for bubble baths. God forbid, I even found a couple of tracks genuinely toecringing. Jochen Arbeit, and Tikiman, are sadly missed. This must be music for brain-dead Tesla chauffeurs. 'Heat' became Automat's arrestingly unimaginative and predictable fifth album. Worn out shuffling dubs and obligatory bleep patterns flirt with new age drivel. So, in hindsight the 'Modul' album from 2020 is Automat's magnum opus.
