intro
Liverpool alt. rock quartet The Garnetts return in impressive style with three track debut EP
Based on the famous Sefton Park statute of Eros in the quartet’s manor of Liverpool, the cover art for the debut EP by Liverpool alt. rock The Garnetts gives an insight into the lyrical content. The prevailing theme on the three track set is love: lack of, difficulty with, or keeping hold of. Retaining the punchiness of the band’s live shows, honed through repeated journeys round the local gig circuit, the set gets underway with ‘Fooling’. The accusatory lyric addressed to a cheating partner is set against jangling guitar textures, given a welcome element of added grit through layers of fuzztone. ‘I Don’t Want You’ as its title indicates is a rejection letter in musical form, splicing Californian sunshine harmonies with angular guitars. Building from subdued verses, the choruses shift into the rhythmic indie disco pulse much loved by Franz Ferdinand and early days The Killers. ‘For The Night’ opening with the regretful lines “I made a fool of myself / Again” tackles the narrator’s attempts at being romantic when it’s not really something within their skillset. An intriguingly downbeat closer, the descending guitar line recalls maters of melancholy, The Smith with ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’. The first time The Garnetts have appeared on wax following a score of digital singles, the set is the perfect primer for new arrivals to the outfit.
