Format: CD

intro

Fantastic joint album From Hollywood actress Jessie Buckley and Suede guitarist Bernard Butler

It is always a concern when a fast-rising Hollywood star releases an album.....will it be worth listening to - or is it just more promotional hype from the studio publicity people? But in Jessie Buckley's case - despite her having received an Oscar nomination this year for her part in 'The Lost Daughter' - nobody need worry. The Irish actress has released a new album that is excellent! The 32 year-old from County Kerry has sung in the West End and she won an Olivier award for her work in the 2021 revival of 'Cabaret'. She also played an aspiring country singer in 2018's film 'Wild Rose' which received rapturous reviews - including for her obvious singing ability. But these were performances where she was primarily an actress playing specific roles. In her new album 'For All Our Days That Tear The Heart' - made with Suede guitarist Bernard Butler - Jessie can be herself. The record provides an engrossing mix of jazz, folk, blues and more - and Jessie delivers a restrained but powerfully emotional performance throughout that goes way beyond actressy stagecraft. She is superb! At first Jessie and Bernard Butler might seem an odd pairing. Her background is film and musical theatre while he is one of Britpop's lesser-sung stalwarts. His brash guitar-work on the Suede singles 'Metal Mickey' and 'So Young' helped pave the way for both Blur and Oasis and he has worked effectively since with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Duffy. But in fact the London-based musician has Irish roots (his family were from Dun Laoghaire) and he and Jessie Buckley support each other very well. Throughout the new album, Butler plays piano and guitar, always complementing Jessie's rich voice - and as songwriters they are an excellent team. They opted not to simply cover traditional folk tunes or jazz standards but instead they have co-written twelve new numbers exploring a wide range of moods. 'Babylon Days' might easily have appeared on Island Records back in the 1970s alongside Nick Drake or Fairport Convention whilst the folkish 'Eagle & The Dove' echoes Joni Mitchell. '20 Years A-Growing' is based on the 1930s memoir of a man living on a remote Irish island and has a nice windswept air and 'Seven Red Tattoos' is plaintive and jazzy. The title track is built around strings and unashamedly melodramatic – allowing hints of Jessie the stage singer to seep through. Butler's great skill as an arranger and his versatility are evident throughout the album - for example, he gives us a strong rocky feel on 'We've Run The Distance' whilst 'Shallow The Water' is very bluesy. And Jessie Buckley's powerful earthiness prevents any lyric ever sounding twee. She really is stunning throughout this album and 'For All Our Days That Tear The Heart' is an outstanding triumph for her and for Bernard Butler.
