intro
Thoughtful and warm first studio album in ten years for indie folk musician Anais Mitchell who has been focusing on her alternative career writing Broadway musicals.
Anais Mitchell has a broad range of abilities. As a singer, she is part of the cutting-edge indie-pop songwriting collective that includes Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Ohio rock band The National. But Anais is a Tony Award winner, too. Her stage musical 'Hadestown' was a Great Depression-era update of the classical Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and it was a big hit on Broadway before completing a successful three-month run at Britain's National theatre in 2018. The triumph of this innovative musical unfortunately forced Anais to put her solo singing career on hold. But she is now bouncing back gloriously with the release of her first album of new material since 2012's “Young Man In America”. Recorded with her friends from Bon Iver and The National, the self-titled LP blends folky pop with the moody atmospherics often associated with those two bands. Anais, 40, was almost nine months pregnant with her second daughter back in Spring 2020 when the pandemic hit New York where she was working. So, together with her husband, Anais left Manhattan and flew to her childhood home in beautiful Vermont, New England to give birth. And then she spent two years there, finessing all the warm, reflective songs on this new album. 'Brooklyn Bridge' has a romantic feel - it is a sweet, whispery ballad about her journey out of New York City. And 'Bright Star' is a pretty love letter to Vermont, her home state. These gems are just two of the many high quality tracks on this album. Anais Mitchell is a great talent. Already revered by many on Broadway, she now deserves far greater chart success than she has achieved so far.
