intro
Breathtaking new live album from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded at two 1979 anti-nuclear concerts at New York City's Madison Square Garden
Bruce Springsteen's new live album takes us back to two concerts at New York City's Madison Square Garden in September, 1979. Springsteen, just 30, was on the threshold of superstardom and the concerts had been organised in response to America's worst nuclear accident, the partial meltdown of a reactor at the Three Mile Island power plant. Though, as he told his audience, Springsteen had no interest in debating the pros and cons of atomic energy....“I ain't here on business, I'm here only for fun,” he sang on 'Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)' as he led the E Street Band through a breathtaking rock show. The 90-minute album is linked with a concert film (available to download) and it frames an electrifying performer in his prime - at the peak of his early powers. Mothballed at the time because he and his managers were concerned his “magic powers of stagecraft” should not be too widely shared, the album is now out as a CD/DVD bundle (£19) or as a double vinyl LP (£29). The E-Streeters are brilliant throughout while Springsteen delivers a screeching guitar solo on 'Prove It All Night' and is joined by Jackson Browne and others for a cover of doo-wop standard 'Stay'. At one point Springsteen calls out for dramatic effect, “If there's anybody in the house who has a weak heart, please leave the hall now” before launching into ever more powerful music. And, so strong and evocative are the sounds on this newly-released album, that the record, too, almost merits a health warning!
