intro
Excellent new album from Terra Lightfoot which confirms her place as one of the best contemporary Canadian singer-songwriters
This time last year I had the happy task of reviewing Terra Lightfoot’s album 'Every Time My Mind Runs Wild'. Her latest album continues to push the boundaries of her music. With a background in folk and alt country, she has been exploring rock, soul and blues in recent times, making the most of her great guitar playing and powerful voice. She’s part of a great tradition of Canadian musicians and deserves to build an international reputation. Not just a great performer, she’s a talented songwriter too. Using members of her live band - Maury La Foy on bass, Joel Hayes on drums and Jeff Heisholt on keyboards - the recordings capture something of that live sound. Kicking off with the high energy of 'Paradise' and 'Pinball King', the mood shifts to soulful on 'Ruthless'. 'You Get High' is currently my favourite track, with its melodic feel. 'Norma Gale' tells the real life story of a songwriter and bass player who struggled to make it in 70's country music, touring non stop whilst raising her son alone. It’s a lovely tribute and a heartfelt connection. There’s a hint of the Doors in 'Hold You'. The band make the most of 'Slick Back Kid', also featuring Oliver Wood. 'Three in the Morning' is suitably world weary and the album finishes with a moody 'Lonesome Eyes'. This is Canadian rock music at its best, a reminder of why musicians from this country’s traditions have been so influential in the music world.
