intro
Diverse fifteenth album from instrumental Turin-based experimental cult outfit, Larsen
Drone music by definition is very repetitive and loud. Larsen, however, allow themselves to meander within these set (drone) rules, which is their great and original virtue. With their screeching guitars reaching out to higher skies, Larsen give Mogwai, for example, a good run for their money. Warped, twisted and tangled, the penultimate track 'Legacy' is proof of this as it inches its way to perfection. With its undeniably hilly soundscape, the overall tone of 'Of Grog Vim' is far too crispy. Simply, however, ignore the quasi Norse touch in the title and enjoy instead its swift elegance. 'Of Grog Vim' rejoices in unsuspected but smooth turns, some of which tend to to be orchestral and others pastoral. The aural quality of the album is all about tension, which is built to immaculate proportions on the track 'Aiming the Target' and aided by squeaks of danger and echoes of false alarms. Larsen's guitar playing, inspired by John Fahey and Vini Reilly as well as by Glenn Branca, which often lifting spirits, too leads to sonic outbursts. A full hour of excitement.
