intro
Utterly compelling Italian shoegaze-fuelled cosmic rock from Rev Rev Rev that thrills from beginning to end
‘Des Fleurs Magiques Bourdonnaient’ may have been an utter bore if those extra flourishes weren’t there. I’m glad I’ll never know for this record is soaked in reverb and whacked out distortion. It’s a tool that both the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine skilfully exploited in their heyday, and Rev Rev Rev want in on the party. In fact the whole of this follow-up to their 2013 debut borrows that hazy, trippy sound, like you are listening to it in a smoke-filled room in a dream state and the vinyl is warped so the music is audibly wobbly and uneasy. Yet you can easily tell each band apart. They all have their individual tells and stock identifiers. No individual track stands out, yet they all feel essential. I have to admit I didn’t expect to be floored in anyway by this but I can hardly find a fault. Seriously? No faults? Well, not really. Well, there is this thing that is weird that happens when the penultimate song ‘Just a Spot’ powers up and starts rolling along. For maybe a second, no, maybe a fraction less than a second, there are no effects other than distortion that run off the guitar. I very much doubt it was unintentional but it feels to me they put it there to trick me or to keep me awake and fully conscious of where I am and what I am doing. It pulls me out of the dreamscape and yanks me back to reality. It’s the only moment on here that really feels human and not of another time, another place. ‘Des Fleurs Magiques Bourdonnaient’ is a wonderfully odd record. It literally saturates you with its sense of otherworldliness. It’s an utterly compelling and oblique document from a band that excites the hell out of me. I love it.
