intro
Otherworldly and distinctive sixth album from experimental duo CocoRosie, which consists of sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady
‘Heartache City’ is the sixth album from the sisters, Bianca and Sierra Casady. Recorded at their farm studio in France and completed in Buenos Aires, it harks back to their earlier quirky and acoustic work. I first came across them with ‘Noah’s Ark’ (2005) and loved the otherworldly quality of their lyrics and musical style. There is a fearlessness in their approach to writing and music making that comes from the confidence to take a unconventional approach that working as a family can bring. Recorded with an acoustic 4 track approach, making use of vintage toys and antique instruments, the result is partly a pretty poppy sound. Their fragile vocals are in a style often imitated since they released their first album, ‘La Maison de Mon Reve’ in 2004. But this fragility belies their serious lyrics. There is even a hint of Patti Smith in the way the poetry builds into a dark song in ‘Lost Girls’. The sisters have also been part of the Future Feminism art collective with Antony Hegarty, exploring gender politics through their music. Don’t underestimate them and don’t be fooled by the quirkiness. If you already know their music, this is a great reminder of their distinctive sound. If you are new to them, it makes an excellent introduction.

Unique and twisted folk rock from Cocorosie, who combine the strange, childlike vocals of Joanna Newsom, with toe organic and electronic-based sounds of Bjork |
