intro
Potentially promising one-track single from Bristol indie pop group the Charlie Tipper Experiment, ruined by its indistinctive vocals
The ninth release from Charlie Tipper, the Bristol based storytellers, feels a little naked out there on its own, with no B side to beef it up or provide a second option if the main attraction doesn't appeal. 'Ride Out' is the song of an older man attracted to a younger woman but fearful of getting tangled up in her world. A twist is promised in this tale that plays out in just over five minutes. Musically the song is perfectly good, it has a good riff with just enough variation to stop it becoming monotonous. The problem is the vocals, both main and backing, seem to be so integrated into the music that it makes it hard to distinguish them. One play leaves me humming the hook (a good thing), but with no idea what the lyrics are (a bad thing). I have no problem with music that rewards repeated plays, that demands I pay attention and is more interesting than sterile and pre-packaged sounds that require no thought. Not being able to hear the vocals clearly though is a turn off.

So, for those of you who can't make out the lyrics, here they are:
I have the patience of a saint
But I don't have time to wait
You have the manners of a child
Always running wild
Your friends are sleeping rough
Living on the street
They're all waiting for their man
I know he's not selling sweets
Do you think it's safe for me to be out here tonight?
Playing music in your car
And I think I like your taste
I'd put my hand upon your knee
But you know that isn't me..
Do you think it's safe for me to ride out here tonight
I try to get you all alone
But you turn me down again
You say it's really far too cold
And you've had enough of men
Do you think it's safe for me to be out here tonight?
