College - Heritage Music

There is old school synthesizer music aplenty on this second album from David Grellier a.k.a. College, who is from Nantes. College was born in 1979, when new wave started to change synthesizer music into pre-house, new beat from Belgium being one such style, yet this album has a deep German distinction to it too. A couple of tracks are, however, unmistakably French, with their jolly popping lullaby themes. Very uplifting, and compositional at the same, 'Heritage' incorporates the naive charm of cartoon and animation innocence. Analog by heart as it were, the tracks zoom like the Thunderbirds over the Autobahn. There is no DJ stuff on here, yet with two or three great tracks to move about to 'Heritage' bridges the gap between dreamscapes of sound and medium techno. All neatly edited, College pays tribute to the past whilst adding a personal touch. 'Tempête Magnétique' tries to push the limit, belting its way to the dance floor with grace. Followed by great introspection on 'Une Ville Silencieuse', the two themes to this album are set against each other in grand sequence. This is easy listening, but at the same time interest doesn't wear out on these twelve tracks; while persistently pleasant and never overdemanding attention - and using seemingly archaic sounds, as if from church bells and organs - they do the trick with shy modesty. 'Départ' and 'Un long Sommeil' deserve full blown DJ remixes. Vinyl DJs can safely head straight towards the magnetic storm of 'Tempête Magnétique'
