Rides - Can't Get Enough

The Rides are a supergroup blues trio, which features Stephen Stills, the legendary solo artist and singer-songwriter with both Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Electric Flag keyboardist Barry Goldberg. Both musician played on the 1968 LP, ‘Super Session’, which was instigated by Al Kooper, but neither met at the time. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the Rides’ other musician, is the youngest member of the band at a mere 35 years old, but already has six number one blues albums under his belt. The project started when Stills and Goldberg started writing together at the request of a joint manager, with Shepherd being the missing link. The album consists of five covers and five originals, including an old unreleased Stills original. ‘Mississippi Road House’ sets the tone, and is a slow blues number with a heavy vocal by Stills and which has a stripped back ZZ Top groove. ‘That's a Pretty Good Love’ is a funky little number and a song to get lost within, while ‘Don't Want Lies’ has a smooth 1970’s Crosby Stills and Nash flow to it, making it instantly a summertime classic. ‘Search and Destroy’ is, of course, the Stooges classic and, while not bettering the original, they give it a decent blues run through. It is only, however, when they get to the solo that they make it truly their own. ‘Can't Get Enough of Lovin' You’ is the lost Stills number. It has from him a Clapton like vocal, while the guitar solo here is as fine as you could wish for from this veteran of the instrument. ‘Honey Bee’ is keyboard and guitar-based, and, originally a Muddy Waters number, is a slow true blues number that that has its listener swaying along gently. ‘Rocking in the Free World’ is a cover of the classic by Stills old band mate, Neil Young, and is much heavier than the rest of the album. The band play it with a real force that Young would be proud of. ‘Talk to Me, Baby’ has a bar room feel, while ‘Only Teardrops Fall’ recalls both recent Eric Clapton and in its growled vocals Leonard Cohen. ‘Word Game’ ends the album in a heavy blues fashion that even ZZ Top would approve of. A wonderful album.
