intro
Eccentric but appealing second album from New York-based singer-songwriter, Darwin Deez
Darwin Deez is a bit of an enigma. Just when you think you’ve got him pigeon-holed as a straight up Americana pop dandy, such as on previous single 'Constellations' he comes back with this album’s opening track '(800) Human'. It’s less immediate, jittery art pop with obtuse lyrics. Faux-pas or genius? I’m leaning towards the latter. There are certainly hints of the quirkiness of They Might Be Giants and the cool of the Strokes, but Deez is his own man and is more than capable of proving himself an equal to both the aforementioned bands. 'Red Shift' with the chorus couplet of "Was there a big bang that I just missed?/Did some explosion cause a redshift?" and 'Chelsea’s Hotel' with "Spread out the blueprints so we can start/To build a hotel on her heart" are the obvious love songs whereas 'You Can’t Be My Girl' has bizarre lyrics such as "You’re sweet but you’re messed up/Your best friend is a red cup" but is still a great song. The socially aware 'Free(The Editorial Me)' is an excellent choice as first single, but it is well worth investing that little bit more in the album as a whole. I even got a gold star from my sixteen year old nephew who, after breaking his gig duck at a Darwin Deez concert in Manchester recently, was amazed to learn that I was already au fait with the work of the aforementioned Mr Deez. Clearly his music appeals to all ages, so dive in.
