intro
Down-to-earth but inspirational Americana and rock on third album from Kentucky-based band, Edgehill Avenue
Edgehill Avenue brings to mind visions of open roads and tall mountains- heading westward in America. The listener may drift to thoughts of four wheels and the need to prove it all night. This music is basic classic rock and Americana; no frills, but it nevertheless rings true. Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, Edgehill Avenue releases their third studio album 'Just Out of Sight'. The band includes Drew Perkins, “Hurricane” Mike McLaughlin, John Poole, LaMont “Phatbeat” Melson and Paul Nevitt. The opener 'Blood & Fire'is down home and country inflected. Straight up earthy vocals meet a steady drum beat and solid guitar based rock. The lyric fits the mood: “Can you leave it all behind?/Take that road that does not wind?” The band’s Americana tinged classic rock draws on influences from Springsteen to the Allman Brothers Band. 'After All' is back to the basics rock; simple yet appealing- striking an easy groove. 'Manifesto' is a treaty that philosophizes on life and religion: “Don’t know much about religion and the promises they make/I’m just trying to get ahead.” 'Reckoning Day'is a testament to the feeling of being up against the wall. The lyric “The world has been spinning from the very beginning/Waiting for this time to pass” is followed by stinging electric guitar. 'Red Sky' starts with an ominous drum beat; guitars join in as well as the distinctive sounds of an organ. 'Wishing Tree', the closer is the album’s finest moment. The song is inspired American rock with strong lead guitar and evocative lyrics that can actually be of help in hard times: “Pushing down the pedal/Head out West- there are mountains in front of me/But they are not obstacles; more like possibilities.” Edgehill Avenue’s 'Just Out of Sight' is a solid outing that ends on an inspirational note.
