intro
Alluring and poetic new EP from emotive Cambridge-based group, Ghostlight
Gearing up for what will be their debut album, Ghostlight teases us with a sample of what to expect. The band’s honesty comes through even at a glance at their cover. The quartet of Al White, Thomas McCann, Jason Tarver and Patrick Fowler, look unobtrusive, a little shy and unconcerned that they are facing the lens of a camera. And, it’s this humility which makes their songs so authentic. White and McCann started the process in Cambridge,an area that is becoming renowned for fan loyalty. Maybe, that’s why they feel they can face the world. Their first EP, ‘Breathing Underwater’ on their own label, “patched up but still melting at the time” reveals their poetic sensibilities. Their video www.youtube.com/ghostlightmusic allows them to spread their visual wings. Producer Cenzo Townshend lent a brilliant touch to the band’s already alluring sound. ‘Photographs’ pulses with sincerity as the words: “All of these photographs they’re fading” rise and fall and build until the line, “But I don’t say anything and I don’t feel a thing” touches us some more. It’s a desperate lover’s attempt to make sense out of what might be the death of a relationship. ‘This City’ is a cry for serenity. “All I need is somewhere we can bleed/where there is no distrust and prejudice.” Falsetto against heaving guitars makes the song a fixative for anyone in need of emotional validation. ‘Photographs’ appears once more as a “Bedroom version” and this time it is revved up and enhanced with bleeps and gripping rhythm. “I am slowly unraveling…” emotionally builds. The two versions highlight the talent of the band, yet keep the message grounded and pure. If this sampler is a reflection of what lies ahead, we’re in for some special treatment.
