intro
Excellent new EP and first release in four years from London/Brighton-based group, the Stars of Aviation, who will also be releasing their debut album this year
I must say that I have totally missed out on this band before. Apparently, this London/Brighton-based group released their first single, 'The Ted Glen EP', under their original moniker of Florence ten years ago. In 2006 their most recent single, 'Marie et l’Accordéon', came out, so it’s about time that they give some new songs to the world, this time in the shape of a four track EP, with two of the songs being taken from their forthcoming debut album, and the other two being exclusive to this release. The title track, which opens the EP, is a really charming pop song with melodica, piano and bassoon, not far from the Lucksmiths or Edson (a Swedish band that was released by Matinée, among other labels… does anyone remember them?). The next song, 'Deepest Dark Peru', is quite different, with its Casio synth bossanova sound and French lyrics, but it’s still very good, and the same can be said about the remaining two songs here, 'Underneath the Elms' and 'You Be the Boy, I’ll Be the Girl', where the latter reminds me quite a bit of the title track, even though this one has it’s fair share of trumpet. The aforementioned album, '6½ Magic Hours', is reportedly out later this year. I’m looking forward to it.
