Impressively eclectic collection of soundscapes on fifth album from largely instrumental Brighton-based post rockers and former Pennyblackmusic Bands Night stars, Air Formation

Wrapped up in a bright orange sleeve, ‘Daylight Storms’, the latest offering from Brighton's Air Formation, doesn’t disappoint. Recorded last May and June, but just released now, this fifth largely instrumental album has lots of lush arrangements and a great beauty. As anyone that knows Brighton well will know, one can often feel there the wind coming off the beach. ‘Cold Morning’, which opens the collection, recollects that and is big and trippy with a large soundscape of the Slowdive variety. ‘Tidal’, another number possibly inspired by the band’s home town, is full on and very loud with a shoegazing glow. The title track is both lush and gorgeous, and has waves of epic sound which charm you as they wash over you. 'I Can't Remember Waking Up’ is lovely and cinematic in tone, before developing some My Bloody Valentine distortion, ‘Into View’ is again trippy and lush, while ‘Formation 1’ is another noisy soundscape. The luscious ‘You Have to Go Somewhere’ features some rare and soft-on-the ear vocals. Both ‘Adrift’ and ‘The Dark Has Fallen’ have large layers of textures and feature a Cure style bass. ‘Before We Forget, the last track, meanwhile sounds like the Cure at the time of their ‘Disintegration’ album. This is an album of several different mood swings, but wonderful with it.
