intro
Lyrical lo fi indiepop/guitar rock from Canadian husband and wife team Kick in the Eye
Kick in the Eye are from British Columbia, Canada. They are Donnie Lochrie, (guitar/vocals) and Marian Lochrie (bass guitar/vocals). I was attracted to reviewing this because the band name is that of one of my favourite Bauhaus tracks, although I thought they may have got the name elsewhere. A look through their influences on MySpace, however, reveals that Bauhaus are there in the list, although I can't detect any Bauhaus type sounds on the CD, which I'm sure most people will think is a good thing! The lo-fi sound of the CD does bring the sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain to mind, but I think that's due to the sound quality. Their tracks are poppy / indie, but much more cheerful than the Mary Chain. It's an enjoyable guitar based romp that has already been out for some time in their native Canada, but, with the band starting to promote themselves on the international scene, they're going to spread the fun around a bit. Lyrically they have a variety of subject matter, from the B-movie sci fi of 'City on the Edge of Time' to driving along listening to the radio in 'Full Spectrum', not to mention their ode to their family traditions at Christmas of 'Hopin' for Snow' which has a groovy repetitive disco beat to it. They are well worth looking out for and have two more releases due for 2007. You can always have a listen to their MP3 of 'Honey Bee', one of the tracks on this album, on their website http://www.kickintheeyemusic.com to get an idea of what they sound like.
