intro

Fantastic collection of B-sides and rarities from Sunderland-based indie poppers Field Music

Hailing from Sunderland and featuring the Futureheads original drummer, it’s inevitable that Field Music will receive some rather lazy comparisons. But while this collection of B-sides and rarities has some Futurehead-esque moments – such as the fantastically catchy opener ‘You’re Not Supposed To’-the band are playing very much their own style. Field Music are often more psychedelic pop than NME-flavoured indie, and at other times a mixture of the two; ‘Breakfast Song’ has a feel similar to the quieter moments on a Pink Floyd record, while album closer ‘Can You See You Anything’ has verses which recall Of Arrowe Hill and a catchy pop chorus that you can imagine going down well with the midday crowd at Glastonbury festival. My personal favourite on this all-round cracker of a record is ‘Test Your Reaction’, a drum-machine lead track with a chorus I’ve been singing to myself every day for the past week. This record is an absolutely fantastic collection of indie-pop, and yet more evidence that to find the best music in the UK at the moment, you need to look North East.
