intro
Challenging but compelling post-rock on debut EP from new Bristol-based band Leave Land for Water,
Leave Land for Water are a new group from Bristol, which consists of Lucas (vocals and guitar), Ollie (lead guitar), Tim (keyboards, effects and vocals), Tom (bass) and Simon (drums/percussion). Perhaps not surprisingly for a band who list Boards of Canada, Mogwai, Slint and Godspeed You Black Emperor amongst their influences, Leave Land for Water’s music has a complex post-rock sound. Far from merely imitating their peers though, Leave Land for Water’s music is never anything but original. Most of the tracks on their new self-titled debut EP are backed by an underlying guitar riff, out of which on each song several different themes usually merge. ‘Leave Land for Water’ is dominated by sudden, dramatic switches in its time signatures and chords. With elements of jazz, electronica, psychedelia, folk and pop also flitting in and out of the average song, it is initially very hard work. Its oddity and abstract strangeness, however, give it a sense of uniqueness and, with each new listening, it becomes increasingly haunting. As one begins to pick out the several different tunes that merge together on each song, it becomes totally compelling. While challenging, Leave Land for Water’s adventurous brand of maths rock is also an exhilarating discovery.
