intro
Promising debut single from New York indie act the Silent Age, whose frontman and pianist Justin Russo also provided the keyboards on Mercury Rev's 'Deserter's Songs'
With a list of collaborating personal that reads like the who's who of the New York indie scene the Silent League release their debut two-track single via the Something in Construction imprint. A beautifully gently and orchestral slice of melancholic pop, lead track 'Breathe' soars to the melodically higher plains previously only inhabited by the Beach Boys. Other reference points such as Mercury Rev, and vocally, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips spring to mind. Not surprising given Silent League's singer and pianist, Justin Russo, was the man behind the orchestral keyboards on 'Deserter's Songs.' There's also a fragility to it all that brings to mind Belle and Sebastian. On this all too brief basis of two songs the band's debut album 'The Orchestra, Sadly, Has Refused' looks like a promising bet. It gets it's UK release early in January 2005 along with live dates to promote it.
