intro
Suprisingly mellow and overtly laid back space folk rock from ex-Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer, Brant Bjork on a solo outing
Brant Bjork has been the king of stoner rock drummers since his days in Kyuss and Fu Manchu, but it seems that nowadays he’s taking it easy. The laid back, dried-out space folk of 'Local Angel' is just a tad to mellow for my tastes (I have to add I’ve been underwhelmed by his other solo stuff as well), but there’s got to be some pot-smoking heads for whom the dozen tracks are just what’s need for chilling out. The deep thrum of 'Beautiful Powers'and its bone simple back and forth riff backs a tale of turned-on hippie chick hoo-hah. It’s a taste of the stripped down stoner rock to come. Even when he turns up the distortion and the attitude (as on “The Feelin’), Bjork keeps things simple, melodic and guaranteed not to harsh anyone’s buzz. Even the cover of 'Hey Joe' seems to be only mildly perturbed at the homicidal, Mexico-bound protagonist. If you want to listen to desert rock on a Sunday morning, look no further. If you want crunch, look elsewhere.
