Catchy debut single from the much acclaimed Editors, which is like "Joy Division updated for the new century"
Review
‘Blood’ opens and takes a hold of you instantly.The Editors' singer Tom Smith’s vocals is very like Ian Curtis, while the guitar, bass and drums are very Sumner, Hook and Morris. This is Joy Division updated for the new century. It is instantly catchy, wonderful, and full of life, which in terms of music should be seen as praise rather than anything negative.
‘Blood’ has two CDS versions. ‘Let Your Good Heart Lead You Home’, which appears on the first CDS, is very slow and quiet. It opens with a very long intro. The instrumentation between the vocal duties floats uncomfortably, but the instruments that assist the vocal sit better. The final few spoken lines are the some of the most heartfelt on record.
‘Heads in Bags’, which appears on the second CDS, is jangly and more commercial. It has an elegant vocal and it sounds something like early U2, which is not a bad place to be.
Blood (The Freelance Hellraiser Editorial)’, which also appears on the second CDs, comes over like an 80’s remix for a 12 inch by New Order. It has aggressive big beats. They have taken a great track, screwed around with it, and the results are half good, half not so good.
‘Forest Fire’, which appears on the 7” version which is also available, is slow and quiet. It has a paranoiac feel,. It eventually speeds up. Tom Smith’s vocal is very much like Paul Banks of Interpol on this. It is very smoothly delivered and not rushed.
