Editors - Munich

Label: Kitchenware
Format: CDS
Fifth single for the Editors from their bestselling 'The Back Room', which appears in three formats and includes various previously unreleased tracks

Review

'Munich' is the fifth single from the Editors' 'The Back Room' album and also a re-release of their second single. It is a big song that demands re-listening too with it classic line of "People are fragile things/You should know by now/Be careful what you put them through" and its lead guitar which commands attention straight away. It appears in three formats, two CDS and a 7" vinyl version, all of which appear in a brown sleeve and it recently entered the Top 10 in the UK singles chart. The 7 inch version includes a demo of 'Camera', one of the tracks on 'The Back Room.' The first CD single has a cover of Stereolab's 'French Disko', which sounds somewhat bizarre being sung by a guy rather than a woman and with an English accent by singer Tom Smith rather than with the foreign tones of Laetitia Sadler. It sounds like it would have done if Joy Division had performed it, and unfortunately is too muddy-sounding to be fully effective. The first track on the second CD is the classy 'Find Yourself a Safe Place', which is moody and haunting, and, somewhat gothic in tone, as black as night. Next up is a near 8 minute remix entitled the Cicada remix of 'Munich'. The darkness of the track is taken away to be replaced by fast beats, while Smith's vocal is reduced to a whine, which really isn't good enough. It regains some of its magic in time for the chorus but then it just goes on too long. Live versions of the track, recorded on their sold out Barfly tour in December can be obtained at www.7digital.com/munich.
