Cathartic, soulful journey on third solo album from Eddie Chacon, who was previously one-half of chart-topping R and B duo Charles and Eddie
Review
In 1992 Eddie Chacon was topping the UK Charts as part of the soul R&B duo Charles & Eddie. After a twenty-year hiatus, Californian singer-songwriter Chacon returned to making music in 2020 and has now brought out his third solo album.
Produced by Nick Hakim, ‘Lay Low’ is a mellow, understated mix of R&B songs with noticeable disco, dub and jazz elements. Underlying themes are loss, grief and love, set against a determined optimism to find hope even after the darkest experiences, including the death of his mother, following a battle with Alzheimer’s.
Songs to listen out for in this eight-track collection include: the plaintive ‘Let You Go’ with its raw lines: “Every single step I take/Reminds me of you” and its distorted echoes as the song fades; upbeat ‘Empire Feat John Carroll Kirby’, with its soul funk, Kirby a longtime collaborator of Chacon; the discordant, reflective title track; ‘Let The Devil In’ with its textured synths; the apocalyptic ‘End Of The World’ with its despairing lyrics: “Feel I’m losing ground/Everything I think and feel is so wrong…/Feel like the end of the world/As we know it”; and the intense closer ‘If I Ever Let You Go’.
Atmospheric, soulful, ‘Lay Low’ leaves a lasting impression.
