Second comeback single from former Sarah Records act Blueboy which with new singer Gemma Townley which still finds them worthy of investigation
Review
Sarah Records were idolised and despised in equal measures during their existence from the late 1980’s to the mid 1990’s. Seen as feeble and weak by some and ideological taste makers by others, they only really received their rightful recognition many years after their demise.
One of the key bands on the label, certainly in the second half of its lifetime, was Blueboy who released half a dozen singles and a couple of albums (including the excellent Unisex) before the label folded once they had released their 100th single.
In 2007 Blueboy’s singer, Keith Girdler, passed away far too young, but the band hadn’t been active for the best part of 10 years at this point.
Fast forward to 2024 and the band re-emerged with Gemma Townley on lead vocals for some live dates and released a couple of singles, .One; and ‘Deux’.
Due to Paul Stewart’s impressive guitar work the essence of the band remains intact, but Gemma’s vocals leads the band into a similar space as St Etienne or even pop-princess Kylie Minogue, which makes Blueboy Mark II a different proposition.
Certainly, worthy of investigation the band do keep the ethics of Sarah Records close and the memory of Keith closer.
