Ramshackle but effective first album in nine years from The Libertines
Review
The Libertines – older, wiser and reportedly now drug-free - return with their first new album in nine years.
Called ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Front’, the title reflects Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ as well as the location of the quartet's new HQ in Margate.
The album's songs are a mix of anthems of the kind featured in the band's 2003 ‘Don't Look Back Into The Sun’ and Pete Doherty's more reflective, nostalgic character sketches.
French record producer Dimitri Tikovoi uses strings, brass and fine backing vocalists to strengthen the band's guitar sound and at one point there is even an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's ‘Swan Lake’!
Overall, though, there is a ramshackle charm about this album which may help win The Libertines some new fans!
