The Libertines were at the Jacaranda Baltic in Liverpool yesterday to launch their new album ‘All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade’.
They appeared at the Jacaranda for the first of two ‘In Conversation With’ events, with the second held at Rough Trade East in London on 8th April.
Amongst the discussions, it emerged that one of the tracks on the new record ‘Man With The Melody’, was written by bassist John Hassall in his bedroom when he was 17, prompting jokes from the band about them only recently letting him have it on an album.
The quartet also revealed that ‘Night of the Hunter’ featured a sample from ‘Swan Lake’ where singer / guitarist Peter Doherty had hummed something very similar and the band “Ummed and ahhed” before deciding “Yes, it is Swan Lake” then, “No it wasn’t Swan Lake” before guitarist / singer Carl Barat stated they went for ‘Swan Lake’ in the end.
The short Q&A session was followed by an acoustic set from Peter and Carl which featured all four Libertines (all of the above plus drummer Gary Powell) taking it turns at the mic to sing ‘Man With The Melody'
The group ended their short set with Libs classic ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’ before heading off to perform at the Manchester Academy that evening.
