Nick Dent-Robinson explains why he feels Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan is a one-off entertainer after watching her perform a gig at the O2 Academy in Oxford
Article
Lisa Hannigan has often been described as a modern renaissance woman.
The Irish singer-songwriter - originally from County Meath - started off in Damien Rice's band and is now widely acclaimed, including in America. Her debut album 'Sea Sew' went double-platinum and was nominated for a Mercury Prize. Then her follow-up album 'Passenger' was another big hit, reaching Number One in Ireland with major sales in the UK and internationally. This second record gained her a Choice Music Prize nomination. Her music features on the soundtracks to 'Fargo' and the Oscar-winning 'Gravity' and Lisa has also starred as a mermaid in the Oscar-nominated 'Song of the Sea,' her acting winning her many positive accolades.
Lisa's latest album 'At Swim' was recorded in a church in Hudson, New York during a frantically creative seven-day stint. It is a another gem - emotional yet musically impressive, in Lisa's highly original way.
At a recent sell-out gig at Oxford's O2 Academy, Lisa demonstrated with great charm just why she has enjoyed the success she has. She performed with feeling, sensitivity plus impressive virtuosity and received a rapturous response from the Oxford crowd.
