Enjoyable new album from Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort’s Iain Matthews, which he has recorded with Norwegian musicians The Salmon Smokers
Review
Iain Matthews is about to release a new album called ‘Fake Tan’. The new record sees 74 year-old Iain teaming up with a group of accomplished Norwegian musicians called The Salmon Smokers – known as the backing band of Norway. Together Iain and The Salmon Smokers present a selection of new arrangements of some of the standout tracks from Iain's long and distinguished career. There are some previously unrecorded songs on the album, too.
Originally with Fairport Convention, Iain subsequently formed his own group, Matthews Southern Comfort, which achieved a Number One UK hit with the Joni Mitchell song ‘Woodstock’ back in 1970. His later band, Plainsong, brought more commercial success. Over the years, Iain has continued to tour and has reformed both Plainsong and Matthews Southern Comfort a number of times. He has featured on over a hundred albums and published his autobiography, ‘Thro' My Eyes – A Memoir’ in 2018.
The new album, ‘Fake Tan’ features a refreshingly lively new version of ‘Woodstock’ as well as a brand new song ‘I Threw My Hat’ plus an unrecorded song from Iain's Fairport days called ‘Reno Nevada’ as well as an interesting version of Dylan's ‘It Takes a Lot to Laugh’ which has featured in Iain's live performances.
Over more than five decades, Iain Matthews has continued to drive his career forward by constantly exploring new ideas, working with a myriad of talented musicians and always putting his heart and soul into all that he does. ‘Fake Tan’ is sure to please Iain Matthews fans, old and new.
