Nickel Pressing - Uncanny

Label: Loaf Recordings
Format: CDS
Effective merging of Celtic fiddles and New Order-style dance beats on magnificent new EP from French trio, Nickel Pressing

Review

This trio sounds as if they felt an exceptional urge during the recordings. The fiddle being the main instrument, it leads the way over a stomping set based around a New-Order-ish floating bass. Their Celtic cover of Kraftwerk's 'Neon Lights' is the wonderfully odd one out here. As for the rest, this EP celebrates clunky dance pop music and tests a violin against a rhythm section, with magnificent results in the end. On 'Shoes' they sound like Talking Heads choking on a croissant and on the closing 'Quick Fashion' track you'll hear more new rave bass plucking with staccato vocals in English. It says 'Uncanny', so do not bother to complain.
