Ham-fisted satirical punk on debut EP from Wigan-based four-piece, the Dead Shores
Review
Wigan’s four-piece the Dead Shores are hardly prolific. Despite having recorded and played live for seven years they have only now got round to releasing their debut recording. That kind of work ethic has got to be applauded. Why rush things to be the next big thing?
The Dead Shores come from a heritage like Half Man Half Biscuit and Sultans of Ping who used humorous satire to get their point across. The single ‘Modern Men’ takes a swipe at metrosexual men. Those men that, apparently, frequent the gym after work, wear FCUK on their tops and read the likes of 'Nuts' and 'Zoo'. Oh. and spend the rest of their time on a sunbed.
Singer and lyricist Craig Whitfield manages to land some punches on his target – clearly he has a thing against flip-flops – but ultimately it’s all a bit ham-fisted and there’s little subtlety here. The point is made – and it’s a fair one – within 30 seconds and then carried on for another two and a half minutes.
And while there are some witty remarks and observations there’s nothing here to compare with the likes of Half Man Half Biscuit’s ‘Back in the DHSS’.
The Dead Shores could be something of a one-trick pony.
