Wednesday 13 - F**k It We'll Do It Live

Label: Global Music
Format: CD
Authentic-sounding glam punk on thoroughly enjoyable live album from former Murder Dolls' frontman, Wednesday 13

Review

Perhaps because Wednesday 13 has yet to break into mainstream press, he provides a consistent level of quality in his music. This applies especially to his most recent release, the 'F*** It, We’ll Do It Live'. Unlike some live albums, this is one of the few albums that gives an accurate portrayal of what a gig by Wednesday 13 is really like. Unlike other live albums which use multiple gigs as sources of their recordings, 'F*** It, We’ll Do It Live 'is taken from a single gig (at Crocodile Rock in Allentown, Pennsylvania in early 2008), and each track is consecutively played as it was that day. Despite the live nature of the album, Wednesday 13’s music is still clearly heard (including the off-key note, and his asides to the audience), but rarely is he drowned out by the crowds. Opening with a discordant cacophony of church bells recalling the classic 1950’s horror movie stereotype (and those not realising what they are listening to may wonder what the racket is – much as my partner did when I was first listening to the album), before Wednesday explodes into 'Gimme, Gimme Bloodshed' and never relents. Highlights from the album also include '197666', 'R.A.M.B.O.', and 'Home Sweet Homicide'. While some bands are more technically competent, and others possess more meaningful lyrics, very few are as much fun as Wednesday 13. For despite the negative connotations of his lyrics (ie “All downhill from here to the hearse”), there is something infectiously cheerful in Wednesday 13’s delivery; which when combined with his gleeful enthusiasm and bouncy glam-punk attitude, you cannot help but be drawn into his world. The accompanying DVD is similarly structured to the CD, providing quite possibly the most accurate portrayal of a live gig by Wednesday 13 to date. While similar DVD’s intersperse the concert with interviews and commentary, this DVD instead provides a seamless experience of what to expect from a concert by Wednesday 13. Suffice to say, after listening to this album, I for one am looking forward to Wednesday 13’s next tour!
