Melancholic and heavy-sounding third album from former Murderdolls frontman, Wednesday 13, which lacks the catchiness of its predecessors
Review
I must admit to being a fan of Wednesday 13, both the singer himself and his band. Wednesday 13 are often referred to as a horror rock band, due to their lyrics traditionally being heavily inspired by horror movies. Musically, they have glam, punk and goth/alternative influences. Wednesday 13 (the person) was formerly the frontman of the Murderdolls, a band of the same genre, best known for their excellent album, 'Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls'.
'Skeletons' is the latest album by Wednesday 13, and I for one had been eagerly awaiting its arrival. Perhaps because of my high expectations, I was somewhat disappointed with 'Skeletons' on first listen. It is darker and heavier than its predecessors. Not that being heavier is necessarily any bad thing, but I felt that this shift in style had taken away the catchiness of the songs, which is what I had come to love about Wednesday 13’s music, and had become an almost main-stream album. For example, on first listening to Wednesday 13’s previous release, 'Fang Bang' (2006), the album didn’t leave the stereo for days and I was singing along by the second listen. 'Skeletons' just didn’t have the same effect: there aren’t any tracks that I can imagine packing a dance-floor or causing an audience to go wild, as some of the older songs such as the Murderdolls' 'Graverobbing USA' and '197666' are almost guaranteed to do.
The title 'Skeletons' refers to the fact that this album is very much about Wednesday 13’s personal life and his struggles with depression. The lyrics, especially the title track, are well thought-out, and Wednesday deserves credit for sharing his experiences. I’m hoping, however, that now this chapter of Wednesday 13 history has been written, the next offering will return to the bouncy, not-too-serious, rock-with-attitude which I love.
Overall 'Skeletons' is an album that grows on me the more I listen to it, but I don’t think it will be making it onto my stereo anywhere near as much as the earlier Wednesday 13 and Murderdolls albums.
