David Hurn - The Beautiful Trustful Future

Label: Fire Records
Format: CD
Mournful, melancholic indie rock on excellent latest album from London-based singer-songwriter, David Hurn

Review

Originally on Day Release Records, David Hurn is now based at Fire Records. His latest album, ‘The Beautiful Trustful Future’, is a gentle affair, which rocks softly with grace and style. ‘Arrival’ starts the album. It features a fragile vocal from David, soft acoustic guitar and some flute, the latter of which adds a lot of depth to this number. It has a retro feel, but in a cool way. ‘Over Me’ has a more upbeat vocal than is usual for David, and lots of odd sound effects in the background. He sounds a lot on it like Nick Drake.‘Our Small Deaths’ is 70’s-flavoured, and David does on it his best English version of Mark Eitzel of whom he is a massive fan. ‘Never Know Why’ has gently picked guitar and a vocal on it that sounds like Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout.‘Gone Too Soon’ is soft and gentle, with flowing horns and an easy-on-the-ear retro feel. It is a song that sounds full of regret. ‘The Man Who Stayed in Bed Forever’ was a single, and sounds both more experimental and cinematic in tone then the rest of the album.‘Above the Volume’ and ‘Weekly Class’ both show that David is a master of his craft. On the latter he sounds like a non angry Eitzel. ‘Washed Up’ is very slow and somewhat moody with soft flute.‘Your Husband and My Disappointment’ is a song about lusting after what you can't have and has perfect wordmanship. This track has more of a band feel than the rest of the album. On the first half of the title track, ‘The Beautiful Trustful Future’, David sounds like a calm Eitzel, while the second half is much more jazzy and experimental in feel.

At the Luminaire in London, Anthony Strutt watches singer-songwriter David Hurn, supporting the American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, play an appealing if slightly monotonous set
