David Hurn - The Man Who Stayed in Bed Forever

Label: Fire Records
Format: 7"
Sorrowful, but intelligent and emotive pop from British-based singer-songwriter, David Hurn

Review

David Hurn is an intelligent singer/songwriter who sings very much with the same frame of mind as San Francisco's Mark Eitzel, whom he has both supported and also in the past sung for as one of his backing singers. Mark sings songs so sad they break your heart, but his humour-filled pre and after-song banter makes up for his dark song content. David is more serious, but he is English, and here we have more rain. 'The Man Who Stayed in Bed Forever' is a serious song, dark, with a horror film like intro, and very sorrowful-sounding instrumentation. David's vocal is heartfelt and sad. The chap in the song feels sorry for himself, but Dave puts over enough spirit in his delivery for us to like the chap and understand where he is coming from. 'Your Husband and My Disappointment', its B side, is strong singer/songwriter stuff, beautifully delivered, and full of pain with very strong acoustic guitar and lovely elegant arrangements.

At the Luminaire in London, Anthony Strutt watches singer-songwriter David Hurn, supporting the American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, play an appealing if slightly monotonous set
