Louise Setara - Still Waters

Label: Capitol
Format: CD
Fine debut album from 18 year old singer-songwriter Louise Setara, which will appeal to fans of Norah Jones

Review

Louise Setara is only 18 years old, but has delivered an album of great beauty with ‘Still Waters’. Signed at the age of 15 years old when some of these fine tunes that make up this, her debut album, were written, the Reading-born girl has Romany gypsy blood in her and is descended from Irish and Brazilian grandparents. ‘Still Waters’ is an album that the Norah Jones crowd will love. It opens with ‘Love Me Still’, which is a soulful piano ballad, and makes her sound far beyond her 18 years. ‘By The Time’ has a mature pop sound and is elegant and graceful, while ‘Make You Feel My Love’ is a Dylan cover, which sounds so unlike Dylan that Louise makes it her own. ‘Homeless’ comes from a real-life love story, and Louise sings on it that love is like a home and without it we are all homeless. ‘Wrong Again’ is a classy pop song, while ‘Too Soon’ is a graceful folk number. Think the greats here ! Beth Orton, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell…. ‘Circle’ is a pop number which will have mass appeal, while ‘Can't Stop the River’ is another cover, this time of a Seal song. ‘Sylvie’ is another soul number and features a backing chorus from Ladysmith Black Mambazo. ‘Let It Be Me’ is a laid back Norah Jones-style number, while ‘I Can Hurt’ is semi autobiographical. ‘If I Should Fall’ is another cover this time by Bruce Springsteen. Again she makes it her own, making it sound like an anthem. ‘Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart’ is another piano-based piece The album ends on another cover, this time of the old Carole King-penned song, ‘One Fine Day, which George Harrison ripped off for ‘My Sweet Lord’ A fine album by a promising newcomer.
