Bobby McGees - ...Yes Please!

Label: Select Label
Format: CDS
Charismatically twee anti-folk on debut EP from new British-band, the ukelele-playing Bobby McGees

Review

Anti-Folk heroes and masters of the ukulele, the Bobby McGees release their debut EP on Lancaster based wonder-label Cherryade. If you like twee brilliance with wit and a real heart, this is one record you must own. The vocal chemistry between singers Jimmy and El is fantastic; from the twee-love tale of ‘Ivor Cutler is Dead’ to the rather less innocent ‘Molly’s Lips’ (“I don’t think you’ve really changed, you used to be a wanker and you’re still the same so kill yourself”), they bounce off each other brilliantly. And even when the lyrics are less than friendly (“I’ll hunt you down and kill you in your bed”), the ukelele and banjo-lead music remains up-beat and fun from start to finish. My personal favourite of the six tracks on this EP is ‘Albert Camus/Audrey Tautou’; a very continental sounding-verse (aside from Jimmy’s heavy Scottish accent, of course) which leads into the minimalist but ultimately very sweet chorus; “we’ll be friends for a little while, happy again”. I beg you, go and buy this EP, enrich your life, play it to your friends and enrich theirs too. Everyone needs a fix of McGees.
