Surprisingly funk and reggae-influenced second single from rising London band the Boyfriends
Review
'Adult Acne' does not rely on the Jesus and Mary Chain style feedback that the Boyfriends used for their debut single 'I Love You'. This second single has more of a funk edge to it.The bass and drum patterns work well within themselves while Richard Adderley's guitar which floats over the top uses reggae riffs which are not over powering.
'Tears Before Bedtime' is slower and more haunting, with very elegant guitar from Richard backing singer Martin Wallace's vocals. The guitar sort of hangs off the words, and the bulk of the track features in what is a perfect marriage just Martin's vocal and Richard's electric guitar. Then around the two and a half minute mark bass and drums join in, and give it more spark. By its end 'Tears Before Bedtime'has become something of rocker, which has you bopping along to it.
Both the songs on this single are as powerful and strong as each other.
