NICK GARRIE Nearly fifty years ago, Nick Garrie produced something of a masterpiece with the album 'The Nightmare of JB Stanislas'. A cult rarity, the album has took on a life of its own, bringing to mind a British version of The Beach Boys' 'Smile' or Big Star’s 'Third/Sister Lovers'. The album masterfully sequenced together psychedelic baroque folk-pop, particularly on glorious reverb-laden songs such as ‘Can I Stay With You’, yet was virtually impossible to get hold of until 2005, when Rev-Ola records finally did the right thing and released it on CD. Recalling British folk rock queen Vashti Bunyan, Garrie, other than briefly emerging to tour in Spain in the 1980s with Leonard Cohen, had otherwise until then disappeared almost completely from view. The last few years have also seen the release of his long-awaited comeback album, '49 Arlington Gardens', on Elefant Records. His appearance at this Pennyblackmusic night will involve an autobiographical mixture of songs and reflections on his life. http://nickgarrie.com/ https://www.facebook.com/nickgarrie/ RAF AND O Raf and O are Raf Mantelli and Richard Smith (aka O), a duo from South London. Their music draws together an intriguing mixture of live electronics, acoustic guitars, synths and strange, jumbled pop melodies. This beguiling mix has seen the duo support the likes of Faust, Alabama 3, and Adam Donen, along with a number of others, including playing the grand environs of Shoreditch Church and the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London's Southbank Centre (as part of a tribute to William Burroughs). They have also contributed music to theatre, such as for the play 'That Woman's Voice – A Tribute to Jean Cocteau and The Human Voice'. Meanwhile, their 2014 album 'Time Machine' made the Top 10 albums list of 2014 in FACT Magazine. http://rafando.com/ https://www.facebook.com/rafando/ PARTISAN WAVES Partisan Waves are a new indie pop trio of like-minded souls from London.
