Efterklang - Magic Chairs

Label: 4AD
Format: CD
Beautifully crafted and compelling third album from Danish indie pop rock outfit, Efterklang

Review

Efterklang are one of a group of European bands, including Sigur Ros and fellow Danes Mew, creating consistently atmospheric, exciting and engaging music. What sets Efterklang apart is an added adeptness for creating a great pop hook to pull a listener in. Their new album, 'Magic Chairs', does little to put an end to the trend. This is ten tracks of beautifully crafted music. Single ‘Modern Drift’ is exactly what you want in an album opener; it grabs you by the ears, ushers you in and makes you want to stick around for more. And so you should, because there are plenty more high points to be found on this record. This album is essentially one great track after another. It’s hard to pick favourites, because as soon as you start mourning the passing of one song, you forget about it and start praising the new one that has come along and replaced it. Efterklang embrace their Scandinavian musical roots, but they also take on an American influence, and the mix really is quite something. It’s big, it’s powerful, it’s wonderful. It’s a very early contender for an album of the year.
