Sennen - Where the Light Gets In

Label: Hungry Audio
Format: CD
Strong second album from Sennen, who turning to pop songs from a post-rock past have provided what might be the summer's best soundtrack so far

Review

Turning to pop songs from a post-rock past might have been a totally mess. Luckily Sennen have just about pulled it off, turning in an album of sweet, soaring and layered tunes that just occasionally let a little bit of noise through. While nowhere near as aurally assaulting as a Mogwai record the post-rock influences are clear on ‘Where the Light Gets In’. Across eleven tracks the band never let this get in the way of a good tune with the crunching guitar fuzz sometimes complementing and sometimes simply supplanting the melodies. From the nearly-cloying ballad of ‘Your Hand In Mine’ to the stomping rock of ‘Just Wanted To Know’ there’s no shortage of good ideas here. And despite being recorded in eight days this is a remarkably smooth sounding affair with almost no rough edges. If anything it is a bit too nice. More noise wouldn’t have gone amiss over some of these tracks. There’s also a lack of cohesion to some of the songs and they jump from one of those good ideas to the next without really bothering to tie the whole package together. They really get it right though at other places, like ‘Here It Is’ which breaks up a simple guitar line with stacatto guitar breaks and lays a drifting series of harmonies over the top. Sennen may have just provided the summer’s best soundtrack so far.
