An unusual gig in central London on a warm Friday evening in a book shop!
Following on from Hefner’s wonderful appearance here the previous week, tonight it’s the turn of BAXENDALE to dazzle and confuse passing tourists! They are here to promote their debut album, the difficult to track down ‘You Will Have Your Revenge’ and most of the eight songs played tonight are taken from it.
Baxendale billed this set as an “end of term concert” before they jet off for a glamour gig in Barcelona. It was more like a Baxendale ‘Unplugged’ sort of set with vastly different versions of live favourites, starting with old single ‘Switzerland’.
Singer Tim was dying to cut loose but was held back by the surroundings-the whole audience sat on the floor! - and only once did he resemble the Tim that we know and love when he knocked over the keyboards.
In between songs Tim took books and CD’s off of the shelves and either read pieces out or plugged it. Destiny’s Child’s album was given the latter treatment which preceded a brilliant cover of their ‘Say My Name’ which was the highlight of the set. In fact if this gig proved anything it was that co-vocalist Senay is turning into a very important part of the band. She took on the vocals for several of the songs tonight and gave them a new dimension.
‘The Beginning Of Everything Else’ brought the gig to a close and signalled a perfect start to the weekend. Borders must be congratulated for putting on these events which happen every week especially as they always publicise smaller Indie bands and you are advised to check out at least one of the forthcoming free gigs.
