British trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba, formed in the 90s with founding members, vocalist Skye Edwards and brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey, have gone through a number of iterations in their lengthy career, including the departure and rejoining, after a five-year hiatus, of Edwards. Their latest album “Escape The Chaos” is the first in four years and their eleventh. It strikes a successful balance between soul-pop and electronica with contributions on bass and drums from Edwards’ husband Steve and son Jaega, its central theme the search for inner peace, away from the relentless demands of the world.
Highlights of the twelve-track collection include: anthemic opener ‘Call For Love’, highlighting Edwards’s velvety vocals; quasi-rap ‘Peace Of Me’, featuring Tottenham rapper Oscar #Worldpeace, a plea for an end to conflict; lead single ‘We Live And Die’, written by Edwards after a serious health scare; sensual ‘Far We Come’; the cinematic, hypnotic ‘Molten’; pulsating, rhythmically ambitious ‘Bleeding Out’; edgy, soul ‘Hold It Down’ with its ethereal backing chorus; the rocker ‘Pareidolia’ with contributions from Columbian flautist El Leon Pardo and Godfrey’s French wife, singer Amanda Zamolo; and the moody, atmospheric closer and title track with its message of solidarity and inclusion.
Sonically opulent, ‘Escape The Chaos’ marks a successful return to familiar territory.
